Dr Petya Petkova, DVM, PhD is Deputy Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency responsible for: the „Animal Health and Welfare, and Feed Control“ Directorate with the BFSA Central Office (CO), the „European Coordination, International Cooperation and Projects“ Directorate with the BFSA CO, the „Veterinary Medicinal Products Control“ Directorate with the BFSA CO, the „National Diagnostic-and-research Veterinary Medical Institute“ with BFSA for the areas of animal health, veterinary medicinal products and feedstuffs, the „Information Technologies, Information Systems and Communication Services“ Directorate with the BFSA CO.

Dr Petya Petkova was born on 15 June 1982 in the town of Stara Zagora.  In 2006 she graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Thracian University in St. Zagora with excellent success and acquired her Master‘s degree in Veterinary Medicine.

During one semester she was in full-time training at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Giessen, Germany.  For the period 2006-2008 she graduated her post-graduate specialization in contagious animal diseases.

In 2011 she graduated her second Master's degree for "Veterinary Administration" at the Thracian University, St. Zagora.  In 2015 she was assigned as a PhD student in an independent form of study within the scientific section "Exotic and Especially Dangerous Infections" with the National Diagnostic-and-research Veterinary Medical Institute - Prof. Dr G. Pavlov ", Sofia.

In 2016 she successfully defended her PhD thesis and gained a PhD degree on "Epizootic Surveillance, Assessment and Model for Risk Management on Pervasion and Spread of African Swine Fever in the Republic of Bulgaria".

From 2004 to 2006 she worked in a clinic for small animals, and from 2006 she has been an employee of the then National Veterinary Service (NVS) starting from junior expert and reaching chief expert‘s position.

After the NVS was restructured into the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), Dr Petkova was appointed as Head of the „Animal Welfare“ Department with the „Animal Health and Welfare, and Feed Control“ Directorate at the BFSA Central Office.  

She has specializations abroad in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Kenya, the Czech Republic and others.  She is fluent in English, German and Russian.
