Dr Damyan Iliev

The Executive Director of Bulgarian Food Safety Agency

Dr Damyan Iliev was born on 14 March 1949 in Sofia.  He graduated from the Higher Veterinary Medical Institute in Sofia in 1975.

From 1975 to 1978 he worked as general veterinary practitioner in the town of Oryahovo.  From 1978 to 1982 he served as surgeon in the clinic for small animals with the Laboratory for Game Biology and Bacteriology.

From 1982 to 1994 he worked as the veterinarian for the national equestrian teams with the National Equestrian Federation.  From 1994 to 1995 he was the governor of the „Khan Asparukh“ national equestrian base in Sofia. From 2000 to 2006 he operated as private practitioner and the surgeon of the veterinary clinic with the Sofia Zoo.

In 2006 he was appointed to serve as Director of the Regional Veterinary Service for Sofia-town with the then National Veterinary Service (NVS). From 2007 to 2011 he served as Deputy Director General of the NVS.  He was also member of the European Commission for Control of Veterinary Medicinal Products (EMEA) in London of mandate from 2008 to 2014.  From 2009 to 2013 Dr Iliev was also member of the statutory body of FVE.

After the restructuring of NVS into Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), Dr Iliev served as Chief Secretary of the BFSA and the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of the Republic of Bulgaria. From 2013 to November 2014 he worked as private practitioner and from November 2014 to May 2015 he served as BFSA Deputy Executive Director and from May 2015 he is the BFSA Executive Director.  Dr Damyan Iliev has of many years’ experience in the areas of veterinary medicine.

Dr Iliev is also member of the Executive Committee of the EUFMD. He has numerous specialisations abroad, in the USA, Switzerland, Germany, France, Great Britain and others.  He is also the Bulgarian Delegate to the OIE (the World Organisation for Animal health.  He is fluent in English and Russian.
